Winterstoke Hundred students shine on biology and environmental trip
Year 12 biology and environmental science students from Winterstoke Hundred Academy recently completed a successful field course at Slapton Ley in Devon.
Blessed with beautiful weather by the sea, students engaged in a range of hands-on, curriculum-linked activities.
They conducted two required practicals and developed key fieldwork skills including plant and moth identification, stream invertebrate sampling, quadrat studies, and testing for a variety of abiotic factors.
Students also practiced kick sampling in a stream and took part in evening sessions monitoring local bat populations.
Back in the classroom, the cohort analysed their data using appropriate statistical techniques, reinforcing the importance of evidence-based scientific investigation.
The trip was not only academically enriching but also a valuable opportunity for personal development.
Students demonstrated exceptional dedication, teamwork, and enthusiasm, providing a fantastic representation of Winterstoke Hundred Academy.
Ella Downing-Sterne, Teacher of Science and Eco-coordinator, said: “We are incredibly proud of how our students embraced this opportunity.
“They worked hard, represented the academy brilliantly, and gained both scientific insight and life skills that will support their future studies and careers.”
