Winterstoke student receives rare offer to study medicine

Winterstoke Hundred Academy post-16 student Nive Nagaratnam is so dedicated to her ambition of a career in medicine that she has earned an offer to study the subject at university – even before she has applied.

As part of developing her understanding of the profession, Nive recently completed a work experience placement through the University of Bristol, gaining valuable first-hand insight into the world of healthcare.

So impressive were her contributions and engagement during the placement that, on the strength of her performance alone, she has already been awarded a contextual offer to study medicine at the University of Bristol – before even submitting her UCAS application.

This is an extremely rare achievement and a testament to her ability, commitment and potential.

Nive said: “I have a strong ambition to pursue a career in medicine and become a surgeon.

“To develop my understanding of the medical profession, I completed a work experience placement through the University of Bristol in the orthopaedic clinic at Weston General Hospital.

“During my placement, I observed patient consultations, learnt how doctors interpret X-rays, participated in history taking and patient examinations, and developed practical clinical skills by measuring blood pressure and heart rate using a stethoscope.

“One of the most valuable aspects of the experience was observing how healthcare professionals communicate with patients who were feeling anxious or emotional, helping them feel comfortable and building their trust.

“This experience gave me a realistic insight into the responsibilities of healthcare professionals and reinforced my passion for medicine. It strengthened my determination to study medicine at university and work towards achieving my goal of becoming a doctor in the future.”
