Leadership at WHA update

Dear parent/carer,

Last week we wrote to you to outline temporary changes within the leadership structure at Winterstoke Hundred Academy. These changes arose after the Principal Ian Garforth began a leave of absence. At that time, we said we would write again with further news when more information was available. We can now share the news that, since our previous communication, Mr Garforth has formally resigned from the position of Principal at Winterstoke Hundred Academy and is moving on from his role at the school.

Mr Garforth had held the position of Principal since the school opened in 2019; during his tenure he and the growing team of staff at the school have worked to establish Winterstoke Hundred as a successful school for Weston-super-Mare, renowned for both its strong education offer and positive relationships with students and families. Significant progress has also been made on a purpose-built second site which will open its doors to students in just a few weeks.

Mr Garforth’s departure means the interim arrangements outlined previously will continue in the short term. Executive Principal Tony Searle will continue to provide regular on-site support for an experienced Winterstoke Hundred leadership team headed by Vice Principal Steve Holland. Additional support from the wider Cabot Learning Federation will also be made available as required.

The early days of the new school year have confirmed that this arrangement works well, with all classes and activities running smoothly.

In the medium term, we will be looking to make a permanent appointment to the Principal role. The process of identifying a suitable candidate has already begun – once again, we will keep you updated as the search progresses. In the meantime, we look forward to a successful and exciting year for all within the Winterstoke Hundred Academy community.

Yours faithfully,

Tony Searle, Executive Principal

Felicity Williamson, Academy Council Chair
