‘The limits of my language mean the limits of my world’ – Ludwig Wittgenstein
At Winterstoke Hundred Academy we are passionate about the power of languages to broaden horizons and to develop the transferable skills that highly sought after by employers in today’s global employment market.
Our curriculum is designed for students of all abilities to achieve their very best in communicating in their chosen modern foreign language and to broaden their cultural understanding, which will empower them as future global citizens.
At Key Stage 3 our students follow a topic-based course, focusing on building a bank of vocabulary, grammatical structures and phonics in order to understand (read and listen to) and to communicate (speak and write in) the language. Students will also learn about cultural similarities and differences, for example how different festivals are celebrated and how school systems differ.
At Key Stage 4, knowledge of grammar, vocabulary and phonics is broadened within topic areas. They will be able to communicate confidently in the target language using a wide variety of structures and opinions and will be able to apply their knowledge of phonics to listening and speaking. Their core vocabulary will have been revisited, extended and developed within each topic area Students will have acquired solid exam strategies and skills.
By the end of Key Stage 5, students will be able to communicate confidently and coherently in the target language, both in writing and speaking. They will be able to understand and analyse a wide range of texts, covering A Level topics and themes, both written and spoken. Students will have studied a literary text and film in the language and will be able to critically analyse and support their arguments, writing essays in the target language. Speaking skills are further developed through an Independent Research Project, where students research their chosen aspect of French or Spanish speaking society and provide a presentation followed by a question and answer session.
