Criminology

Criminology –  Level 3 Applied diploma – WJEC

Criminology students will develop the skills required for independent learning and development including a range of generic and transferable skills that will support learning in other subjects. In addition, students will be able to develop the ability to solve problems using project based research and presentation skills. As the content of the course is closely related to the real world context, students will also be able to develop skills that allow them to work in a professional environment and understand the functioning of the criminal justice system and crime related incidents in more detail. Students will also be able to use techniques and a wide range of relevant information to analyse crime-related issues and problems.

Year 12Students work towards the Applied Certificate and study the following two units:

1. Changing awareness of crime – different types of crime, public awareness and reporting.

2. Criminological theories – how do we decide what behaviours are criminal and why do people turn to these acts?

Assessment

Students will complete a controlled assessment (open book) for Unit 1 which is internally assessed, and an exam for Unit 2 which is externally assessed.

Year 13Students work towards the Applied Diploma and study a further two units:

3. Crime scene to courtroom – focusing on the process from the initial crime until the final court verdict.

4. Crime and punishment – the different approaches to dealing with crime and the effectiveness of each.

Assessment

Students will complete a controlled assessment (open book) for Unit 3 which is internally assessed, and an exam for Unit 4 which is externally assessed.
